ABSTRACT
The research surveyed the perception of engineering library users on adopting 5g-technology for access to quality information in Bayero University Kano. The study adopted a quantitative approach using cross-sectional survey design. Accidental sampling technique was used to select a sample of users from Bayero University Engineering Library who served as the population of the study. The researcher employed accidental sampling technique to select the cases that are at hand until the sample reaches a desired size, on a first-come, first-served basis. A total of 109 copies of the questionnaire were administered to the research sample size. Data collected were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics to answer research questions. The findings of the study revealed that almost half of the engineering students agree that the applications of modern 5G technologies are considered as tools that greatly assist in quality information access, many of the engineering students disagreed that the advent of 5G technology has revolutionized information access, many of the engineering students agreed that people in this digital era, are now dependent on technologies for their entertainment, communication and educational activities through their smartphones, iPad, tablets, iPhones, BlackBerry and laptops connected to the internet. Many of the students disagreed that a new technology called 5G emerged to cater to the challenges low rate of information access, frustration and loss of time-management. Many of the engineering students agreed that 5G planning incorporates Internet connection speeds faster than current 4G, and other improvements, and many agreed that 5G has high data rate and better coverage area. Almost half disagreed that 5G has low battery consumption and can provide Internet connectivity anytime anywhere, almost half were undecided whether 5G technology is a revolutionary technology in the field of wireless telecommunications implementing the latest networking architecture which provides high quality services or not. Majority of the engineering students agreed that 5G stands for fifth generation wireless technology that has three main features: greater speed, lower latency, and the ability to connect a lot more devices simultaneously. Almost half of the engineering students agreed that libraries and sister information agencies, should take advantage of the existence of the 5G technology to ensure effective information services, and almost half of the engineering students agreed that 5G is characterized by larger number of supporting devices and lower cost of infrastructure development.
