ABSTRACT
Access to information is crucial for promoting economic empowerment among women, enabling them to leverage economic resources and opportunities for financial stability. This study explores the information sources utilized by women in purdah for economic empowerment in Kano State, Nigeria. Purdah, a cultural practice of female seclusion, often limits women’s physical mobility and access to public spaces, posing challenges in accessing information to enhance their economic activities. This study investigates the information sources used by the Women in Purdah (WIP) in Kano State to bolster their economic empowerment endeavors. Employing a quantitative research approach with a cross-sectional survey design, data were gathered from a sample of 311 women, drawn from a target population of 1,419 using Israel's formula. Findings revealed that despite the constraints, all respondents engaged in various household economic activities. Due to restricted mobility and social interactions, they predominantly relied on informal channels, particularly established relationships, to meet their information needs. Barriers such as household responsibilities, discouragement from family to visit libraries, and inadequate proximity to libraries impeded their access to relevant information for economic empowerment. Significant positive correlations were identified between information sources used and the economic empowerment activities. The study recommended that WIP should be given a tailor help for their businesses, create opportunity for them to interact with diverse information sources as well as establishing accessible library within close proximity.
