ABSTRACT
Organizations including libraries all over the world are witnessing tremendous changes in recent years as a result of advancements in technology such as Artificial Intelligence which has improved the delivery of library services and their overall performance. This study aims to review literature on the roles of artificial intelligence (AI) for sustainable delivery of library service in 21st century in Nigeria with a view of improving service delivery. Hence, this paper highlighted the concept and components of artificial intelligence (AI) such as network, intranet & extranet, computer/smartphones, tools, groupware, data warehousing, data Mining and online Analytical Processing System (OLAP). It also highlighted the roles of artificial intelligence (AI) for delivery of library service in 21st century particularly in the area of library automation, Internet, data processing, tangible robotic, conversational interactions, decision support in the library, developing capabilities that can exceed the human mind, saving the time of both librarians and clients and providing solutions to pressing classical challenges facing libraries. The paper identified the library services facilitated by AI in 21st century such as, cloud library services, internet services, reference and information services (RIS), circulation services, current awareness service (CAS), selective dissemination of information (SDI), indexing and abstracting services (IAS), inter library cooperation and networking, readership promotion (RP) and user education (UE), bibliographic verification services and reprographic services. The study also identified challenges associated to the use of AI for library service delivery in 21st century. The study adopted the systematic literature review approach which focuses on scholarly sources on a specific topic and analyzes, synthesizes, and critically evaluates to give a clear picture of the state of knowledge on the subject. The paper concludes that the roles of AI in transforming service delivery in libraries has become very significant and crucial as it provides the opportunity to smoothly capture, process, store and disseminate information to both employees (librarians) and customers (clients) over a long distance within a very limited period of time.
